Farmers Markets
Hartford Farmers Markets: Fresh Local and Five Days a Week!
For the first time in almost 30 years the City of Hartford is “putting its money where its tomato is” with a new Farmers Market poster campaign. The poster was developed to publicize and promote the markets and the healthy food that is found there. It will soon be seen all over Hartford with limited supplies available for sale at the farmers markets later in the summer. The artwork and printing was made possible by a generous contribution from the Court of Common Council and is the first part of this cross-market campaign.
This is the first time that Hartford’s farmers market managers have sat down together with the City to work together to promote the overall benefit and availability of fresh produce from farmers markets. “This has been a great opportunity for us all to share our energy to build vibrant markets in Hartford,” West End market manager Shannon Raider said. The group has included market organizers from all Hartford’s markets, the City of Hartford Department of Health and Human Services, The Hartford Food System and the Knox Parks Foundation. City staff called the marketers together after attending The Municipal Summit on Climate Action Sponsored by the Governor’s Steering Committee on Climate Change.
Farmers markets provide a vital link between farmers, Hartford residents and healthy food. In a 2005 study by the Hartford Food System and Community Food Security Coalition, Hartford ranked 166 out of 169 towns for most food insecure. The City’s encouragement recognizes that Hartford’s farmers markets:
- generate economic development
- combat food insecurity,
- build sustainable community,
- have unbeatable taste, quality and healthy choices available
- are good for our environment
- preserve the agricultural heritage of our state, and
- are FUN!
Hartford farmers markets also all accept WIC Farmers markets check with many also accepting EBT. This means greater access to healthy local fruits and vegetable for Hartford residents.
This exciting new partnership between the city and farmers markets comes at a time when Connecticut has seen an explosion in farmers markets in the state. By sharing in the responsibility for the success of these markets Hartford becomes a competitive destination for farmers and consumers alike to enjoy these vibrant community events.
