Hartford Community Food Survey
In December 2000, the Hartford Food System released the results of a survey conducted
in Hartford from May through October 1999. The survey examined the question, why are so
many still hungry during a time of great economic prosperity, and when government and
private food-assistance programs are in place? Researcher Katie S. Martin conducted a survey of 330
households in Hartford to determine food insecurity rates, participation rates in food
assistance programs, the role of social capital and networks in protecting against food
insecurity. The results as well as policy implications are summarized in the report: "Food
Security and Community: Putting the Pieces Together."
