Hartford's Newest Grocery Store Ranks Among the Least Expensive
Of the eight Hartford-based food stores surveyed in the May 23-24, 2004 price comparison conducted by the City of Hartford Advisory Commission on Food Policy, Shop Rite in Manchester rates as the store with the lowest overall prices. Closely following Shop Rite in terms of low prices is Megafoods, Hartford's newest full-size grocery store, located at 76 New Britain Avenue. The Commission also surveyed Shaw's in West Hartford, Stop & Shop in Bloomfield, Big "Y" in East Hartford, Stop & Shop in Hartford, Stop & Shop in Wethersfield, and Waldbaum's in West Hartford.
Best Prices by Category
The Commission conducts the survey twice a year in eight area supermarkets as a service to residents of Hartford and surrounding towns. The supermarkets are chosen both for their proximity to the city as well as their accessibility using public bus lines. A forty-one item market basket approximates the type of purchases that a typical grocery shopper would make in a given week. The item list was developed using general United States consumption information reported in the Progressive Grocer Magazine, the USDA's Thrifty Food Plan, and advice from researchers who have done market basket surveys in the past. Prices for the survey are based on actual store prices recorded by Commission volunteers. The survey includes information on public transportation to the stores, and this May 2004 edition contains a section on Hartford area Farmers' Markets.
