Grocery Delivery Service
Elderly people who are disabled or ill may find obtaining food a serious problem.
Few grocery stores deliver food, and those that do are often high-priced.
Elderly transportation services often limit the number of bags passengers can
carry and cannot help people bring groceries inside their homes. Seniors find
themselves paying for a service to shop for them or become dependant upon friends or
family members to purchase and deliver their groceries. For low-income
individuals, their ability to purchase healthy, nutritious food may suffer,
placing them at risk for further illness. The Grocery Delivery Service helps
homebound seniors get good, reasonably priced food delivered into their home and
helps them retain their independence as long as possible.
In 2006, the Grocery Delivery Service provided affordable food to almost 60 homebound seniors living in Bloomfield,
Hartford, New Britain, West Hartford, and Wethersfield, most of whom live in or
near poverty. More than a thousand separate deliveries were made to these seniors.
